A Few Summer Projects
As you already know, if you’re a regular visitor here, I have a thing for English Paper Piecing (EPP). While at the cottage this summer I actually started three (yes 3) new EPP projects, because, you know, one just isn’t enough!
First, Gail very generously loaned me the templates and papers after making her own Tula Nova. She again was also generous enough to give me some of her Tula sewing machine fabric because I had run out of it and it is no longer available. Saved by Gail for making my own sewing themed quilt that will eventually be a large wallhanging. I found a beautiful lime green solid for the background.
Instagram influenced me again for the following two projects. Lucy’s Gift is a free pattern from Paper Pieces. It requires only 2 templates, an elongated hexagon (called a honeycomb) and a square, and both have 1” edges. I fussy-cut the centre honeycombs and used four fabrics throughout for continuity, a great lime green tone-on-tone, two light grey solids, and Tula Pink’s Northern Lights in mint. I’m loving how the blocks are turning out.
The second Instagram eye candy is Ice Cream Soda by Tales of Cloth. I found a great tiny polka dot print with a white background and brightly coloured dots. It’s going to be so cute. Again, there’s lots of fussy-cutting to add extra interest. It uses a small diamond shape, a kite shape, a triangle and a crown. Go online and check out all the interesting colour combinations for this great pattern.

And you know how much I love my DIY projects! There was a hideous cabinet in the cabin that had been there from the early 1970’s, made with leftover lumber and topped with a piece of old vinyl flooring, glued on with so much glue it was a pain in the butt to remove. As the saying goes, I tried to “make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear”. There was leftover paneling from when we did the walls that I attached to the back and it was painted in my leftover “Cracked Pepper” Behr paint from when I did the buffet and hutch and armoire. I found some great black metal legs on Amazon and Voila! Not perfect by any means, but so much better than the original.
The other project was painting and adding new hardware to a nightstand that I found for $10. This will go next to the single bed in the cabin.
There never seems to be lack of things to do to keep my creative juices flowing. I have a couple of other pieces that I’ve been procrastinating with so they will be on next summer’s project list. What did you do on your summer vacation? LOL.
